Lush, sensual paintings by Alvaro Gomez

Jardín de pasión (Garden of Passion) detail, acrylic 49 x 126

Alvaro Gomez, head of printmaking at Monte Azul Press, has recently directed his attention towards his paintings on canvas. These works, largely abstract landscapes, capture Alvaro’s love of Costa Rica’s rainforest and rural countryside.

His color palate of grays and yellow hint at the equatorial seasonal rains and reflect Alvaro’s hopeful outlook in the face of sometimes overwhelming challenges.

Structurally, the lyrical quality of his paintings may owe a great deal to Alvaro's interest in poetry, literature and music. Certain patterns of paint and color across the canvas recall the pages of sheet music; classical structures that rise and fall in cyclical form painted over fields of jazz-inspired random order. Yet, spontaneity is not lost despite his intellectual concerns.

Gomez’s concerns with the loss of habitat in his beloved rainforest are manifested in the ethereal qualities of his works. Rather than literal depictions, Gomez’s rainforests present an otherworldliness to the viewer. A place experienced with many senses, of extraordinary beauty and of incalculable value.

His work is at once about our optimistic determination to preserve what is left of the natural world, as it is a wistful memory of paradise lost.

Alvaro Gomez’s paintings and works on paper may be viewed at MACA

New York or at Monte Azul in Costa Rica. In February of 2009, Mead Brown, Costa Rica based luxury travel experts, will host a reception for Gomez at their venue in Playa Herradura (next to Los Sueños Resort). Contact us for details.

New York Based photographer Hai Zhang, visits Monte Azul.
In August of 2008, Hai Zhang brought his camera and open mind to Monte Azul, the results were a compelling body of work, “Waiting for the Rain.” A Chinese native, and a New York resident, Hai has focused his attention and his lens on globalization and the impact on communities ranging from his native China to Alabama, and now Costa Rica.

During his stay at Monte Azul, Hai captured images of a native Costa Rica, the mountainous country side of the Chiripó River valley, and the people and their daily lives far removed from the bustling coast and tourist attractions many visitors see and know.

The resulting images are striking as they capture the daily lives of the locals, but also the extraordinary strength and character of the local campesino (farmer).

Monte Azul Spearheads Local Farmer’s Market
The Feria Orgánica (Organic Farmers’ Market) comes to our village of Chimirol. Given the abundance of organic produce, diary products, and the skilled local craftspeople, Monte Azul has coordinated with the local chamber of commerce to begin a farmers market in Chimirol. Our test market went beautifully back in October and it is time to initiate a regular market beginning in March 2009.

Until now, the local growers of produce have driven their product 30 minutes to San Isidro to sell in open air markets, meanwhile, many local residents have traveled the same distance to buy their weekly groceries. Our goal was to offer our community a local market, to buy, sell and trade goods and services, while retaining capital within our own community and bringing in business from the surrounding areas. In addition to the economic benefits, the simple process reduces the communities carbon footprint, offering another example of how sustainable business is good business.
