Total driving time varies from 2.5 to 3.5 hours.
Take highway SOUTH to San Jose.
Upon passing Instituto Costarricense de Turismo and Denny's restuarant on the left (10 min from airport) continue on highway overpass, and immediately turn right onto the CIRCUMVALACION (prior to underpass).
Continue through several roundabouts, abut 15 to 20 minutes. At the ZAPOTE roundabout, exit RIGHT following signs for CARTAGO and VOLCAN IRAZU.
Total driving time about 2 to 2.5 hours, 125 km or 82 miles on the Pan American Highway (known locally as the Interamericana)

About 2 km or 1.5 mi from ZAPOTE roundabout and 1km from Mulitplaza Mall, follow signs to
CARTAGO (1 Right, 1 Left, 1 Right then Left onto 4 lane highway).
You will be on the
INTERAMERICANA Hwy, do not detour for approx. 125 km / 82 miles passing CARTAGO, CERRO DE LA MUERTE.

ARRIVING in
SAN ISIDRO DEL GENERAL in PERÉZ ZELEDÓN Pass the
SECOND bridge through town.

After passing the second bridge, look on the left for
MAXI BODEGA (large grocery store).
On the same side (LEFT), follow up the small hill on a road parallel to the highway.

Continue for about 20 minutes and arrive at the town of
RIVAS. Pass the large church in the center of town, at the point where the pavement end (about 100 meters from church), follow sign to
Parque Nacional Chirripó, to the RIGHT.

After about 6 kilometers, about 10 to 15 minutes, pass
BAR LAS PALMAS, (look for the PILSEN beer sign) on the LEFT. Take the
SECOND RIGHT, at the corner by the bus stop on the RIGHT and continue across the bridge to immediately arrive at Monte Azul.
